Howard County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Saint Paul , named after JN and NJ Paul, two early settlers.

The county is located east of the geographic center of Nebraska and has an area of ​​1,491 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Merrick County , Hall County , Buffalo County , Sherman County, and Greeley Counties .

history

Howard County was formed in 1871. It was named after Union General Oliver Otis Howard .

Two locations have National Historic Landmark status , the Coufal Site and Palmer Site archaeological sites . Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 11, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Howard County had a population of 6,567. 42 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,546 households and 1,797 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer.
