Jefferson County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States of America . The county seat is in Fairbury , which was named after the city of Fairbury in Illinois .

The county is located in southeast Nebraska, borders the state of Kansas to the south and has an area of 1,491 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. In Nebraska, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Saline County , Gage County , Thayer County, and Fillmore Counties .

Jefferson County was formed in 1856. It was named after Thomas Jefferson .

After the census in 2004 here 8,090 people in 3,527 households and 2,352 families lived. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.42 percent white, 0.07 percent African American, 0.38 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.04 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.50 percent from other ethnic groups together; 0.42 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.31 percent of the population.
Of the 3,527 households, 28.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.9 percent were married couples living together, 5.8 percent were single mothers, 33.3 percent were non-families, 29.6 percent were single households, and 17.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.85.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.3 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 22.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 91.8 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,629 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,747. Males had a median income of $ 26,929 versus $ 18,594 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,380. 8.0 percent of families and 8.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 10.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
