Howard County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Saint Paul , named after JN and NJ Paul, two early settlers.

The county is located east of the geographic center of Nebraska and has an area of 1,491 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Merrick County , Hall County , Buffalo County , Sherman County, and Greeley Counties .
history
Howard County was formed in 1871. It was named after Union General Oliver Otis Howard .
Two locations have National Historic Landmark status , the Coufal Site and Palmer Site archaeological sites . Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 11, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Howard County had a population of 6,567. 42 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,546 households and 1,797 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.69 percent white, 0.30 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.32 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.32 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.01 percent of the population.
Of the 2,546 households, 33.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.0 percent were married couples living together, 6.2 percent were single mothers, 29.4 percent were non-families, 26.0 percent were single households and 15.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.3 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 101.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 97.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,305 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,259. Males had a median income of $ 27,270 versus $ 19,587 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,535. 8.5 percent of families and 11.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 14.3 percent were children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 15.0 percent were people aged 65 and over.
