Sheridan County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Rushville , which was named after Rush Creek. In the city was Buffalo Bill temporarily a headquarters.

The county is located in northeastern Nebraska, borders South Dakota to the north and has an area of 6397 square kilometers, of which 75 square kilometers are water. In Nebraska, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cherry County , Grant County , Garden County , Morrill County , Box Butte County, and Dawes County .

Sheridan County was formed in 1885. It was named after General Philip H. Sheridan .
Ten buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 12, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Sheridan County had 6,198 people in 2,549 households and 1,728 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.11 percent white, 0.08 percent African American, 9.23 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.08 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.47 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,549 households, 30.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.0 percent were single mothers, 32.2 percent were non-families, 29.6 percent were single households, and 16.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.95.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 21.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 96.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 91.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,484 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,167. Males had a median income of $ 21,892 versus $ 18,423 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,844. 11.0 percent of families and 13.2 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 20.3 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
