The county is located almost in the far west of Nebraska, borders Colorado in the south , is about 50 km from Wyoming in the west and has an area of ​​3,099 square kilometers with no significant water surface. It borders on the following counties:

Cheyenne County was formed in 1867 on former Indian land. It was named after the Cheyenne people .

As of the 2000 census , Cheyenne County's population was 9,830. 126 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,071 households and 2,686 families.
