Sidney is located on Lodgepole Creek and what is now Interstate 80 , owes its existence to the construction of the transcontinental railroad. The city was founded in 1867 by the Union Pacific Railroad and developed around the Fort Sidney military base , which was established to protect the railway line from possible Indian raids.

Sidney is roughly on the western border of the wheat belt ; west of the city, the land is increasingly being used for cattle breeding.
