Sidney is located on Lodgepole Creek and what is now Interstate 80 , owes its existence to the construction of the transcontinental railroad. The city was founded in 1867 by the Union Pacific Railroad and developed around the Fort Sidney military base , which was established to protect the railway line from possible Indian raids.
Sidney is roughly on the western border of the wheat belt ; west of the city, the land is increasingly being used for cattle breeding.
The Virginia Smith HVDC close coupling is located near Sidney .

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Sidney had 6,282 people. The population density was 393.1 people per km². There were 2890 housing units at an average of 180.8 per km ². Sydney's population was 95.22% White , 0.18% Black or African American , 0.76% Native American , 0.56% Asian , 0.05% Pacific Islander , 2.07% of other races belong to and 1.16% named two or more races. 5.91% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
