history

In 1873 settlers with Norwegian roots began to claim the first areas in what is now the local area and to build the first houses. In the same year, the Lincoln Land Company dispatched WZ Taylor to establish the settlement and a new county, Hitchcock County. He drew up a plan for the place and set up a first shop. Taylor named the settlement "Culbertson". The namesake for this was Alexander Culbertson, a well-known fur trader and Indian agent . Since Culbertson was the only place in the county at that time, it was made the county seat . A first post office was set up in 1874 and a courthouse in 1876. The place had already seen steady growth in the first years, not least because it was on the route of some large cattle trains.

The construction of a railroad line in the early 1880s by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad initially ensured further growth of the place. Taylor, who still owned most of the land in Culbertson, could not come to an agreement with the company on price, which is why the planned depot was built in neighboring McCook . This led to a decrease in Culbertson's population.

The first school opened in 1876. The first newspaper of Culbertson appeared in 1879 and was called The Globe . A second newspaper was published in 1880, with The Culbertson Sun a third newspaper was added in 1881. Culbertson's first church was consecrated in 1882. In 1885 the place was raised to the status of a village . Then Culbertson should be renamed "Bangor", but this was prevented by a petition from the residents.

From 1891 there were plans to relocate the county seat to Trenton and thus to the center of Hitchcock County. It took three ballots by the end of October 1893 to confirm the relocation of the administrative headquarters to Trenton. The high point of the debates about the county seat is the alleged theft of the administrative files from Culbertson by some residents of Trenton on October 1, 1893, which they are said to have been encouraged to do by a district judge, but this act is not historically secure.

In the floods that were caused by the floods of the Republican River in the south of the village in May and June 1935 and that also wreaked havoc in other parts of the county, at least six people were killed in Culbertson when their home was carried away by the floods has been.
