Holt County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is O'Neill , named after the city's founder, General John O'Neill .

The county is located in northwest Nebraska, is approximately 20 km to the north from South Dakota and has an area of 6,262 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Boyd County , Knox County , Antelope County , Wheeler County , Garfield County , Loup County , Rock County, and Keya Paha Counties .

Holt County was formed in 1876. It was named after the Minister of War Joseph Holt .

According to the 2000 census , Holt County's population was 11,551. 225 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,608 households and 3,170 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.86 percent white, 0.03 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.35 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.71 percent of the population.
Of the 4,608 households, 31.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.7 percent were married couples living together, 5.6 percent were single mothers, 31.2 percent were non-families, 28.7 percent were single households and 15.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.06.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.3 percent of residents under the age of 18, 5.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 19.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.5 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 30,738 , and the median income for a family was $ 37,463. Males had a median income of $ 24,681 versus $ 17,593 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,256. 9.8 percent of families and 13.0 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 15.0 percent were children and young people under the age of 18 and 12.1 percent were people aged 65 and over.
