Holt County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is O'Neill , named after the city's founder, General John O'Neill .

The county is located in northwest Nebraska, is approximately 20 km to the north from South Dakota and has an area of ​​6,262 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Boyd County , Knox County , Antelope County , Wheeler County , Garfield County , Loup County , Rock County, and Keya Paha Counties .

history

Holt County was formed in 1876. It was named after the Minister of War Joseph Holt .

According to the 2000 census , Holt County's population was 11,551. 225 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,608 households and 3,170 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.86 percent white, 0.03 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.35 percent were descended from two or more races.
