Republican Conference Chair
The Republican Conference Chair , sometimes referred to as the Republican Conference Chairman or Chairwoman , is an office in the leadership of the Republican Party faction in the United States House of Representatives .
From January 3, 2019 to May 12, 2021, Liz Cheney , the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney , held the office before she joined the Republican Party due to her criticism of former President Donald Trump and his ongoing remarks on the lost 2020 presidential election fell out of favor and was voted out of office. On May 14, Elise Stefanik was elected as successor, who expressly supports Donald Trump.
tasks
The Republican Conference Chair chairs the weekly meeting of the Republican parliamentary group in the House of Representatives. Nevertheless, the office has more of an administrative role and is therefore not comparable to a parliamentary group chairman , since this (political) role tends to be assigned to the majority or minority leader. Nevertheless, the office is seen as a stepping stone for a further political career; well-known former chairs are z. B. the future President Gerald Ford , the future Vice Presidents Dick Cheney and Mike Pence or the Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner .
In the parliamentary group meetings, current topics and legislative proposals are discussed, as well as offices such as B. the Whip (comparable to a parliamentary manager ) elected. Other tasks of the Republican Conference Chair or the Republican Conference, which he chairs, are to provide MPs with other services, such as B. to provide further training courses or press materials. They also host the meetings between the Republican representatives and the electorate.
Since this office has many functions, when Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives, it is (de facto) the fourth highest Republican position after the House Speaker , the Majority Leader and the Majority Whip; If the Republicans are in the minority, however, they no longer provide the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Republican Conference Chair becomes the third highest person in the Republican parliamentary group behind the opposition leader (minority leader) and the minority whip. This has been the case since the 2018 election, so Elise Stefanik is currently the third highest Republican woman after Kevin McCarthy and Steve Scalise .
In the Senate of the United States there is a similar office, which by John Barrasso is exercised.
