Doug Collins (born August 16, 1966 in Gainesville , Georgia ) is an American politician . He has represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives since 2013 . Since 2019 he has been the opposition leader on its judicial committee, the House Judiciary Committee .

Career

Doug Collins attended North Georgia College in Dahlonega until 1988 . In 1996 he graduated from New Orleans Theological Seminary . After completing a law degree at the John Marshall Law School in Atlanta and being admitted to the bar in 2008, he began working in this profession. He is also active as a pastor and private businessman. Since 2007 he has been a member of the United States Air Force Reserve . Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2012 .

In the 2012 congressional election , Collins was elected to the US House of Representatives in the ninth constituency of Georgia against Jody Cooley, a Democrat, in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Tom Graves on January 3, 2013 , who was in the newly created 14th district changed. After he was re-elected in 2014, he was able to take up another term in Congress on January 3, 2015. Re-elected in 2016, he was also a member of the 115th Congress of the United States , which met on January 3, 2017 . Collins was re-elected in the 2018 congressional elections and is a member of the 116th Congress of the United States, which met on January 3, 2019 .

Collins has been the opposition leader ( ranking member ) on the House Judiciary Committee since 2019 . In January 2020, he became part of the White House advisory team in connection with the impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump.
