Robert Laurence "Bob" Barr Jr. (born November 5, 1948 in Iowa City , Iowa ) is an American lawyer, radio presenter and politician .

Professional career

From 1971 to 1978 Barr worked as a consultant for the CIA intelligence agency . After retiring from the CIA, Barr went to Georgia and practiced as a lawyer. In 1986 he was appointed by US President Ronald Reagan to succeed Stephen S. Cowen as federal attorney for the northern district of Georgia, where he served until 1990. From 1990 to 1991 he was President of the Southeastern Legal Foundation . Barr has also worked as a journalist, including a columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution .

The break with the Republican Party

From 1995 to 2003 Barr represented the 7th electoral district of Georgia in the United States House of Representatives as an MP for the Republican Party . The American Conservative Union rated Barr's voting behavior in Congress with a value of 98 - with a maximum value of 100 - which makes him an extremely Conservative MP. Barr broke up with the Republican Party after September 11, 2001 in protest against what he saw as a growing number of attacks on civil liberties in the United States. Barr agreed to the Patriot Act 2001, which he later regretted. In 2006 he became a member of the Libertarian Party. Barr had already officially supported the then presidential candidate of the Libertarian Party, Michael Badnarik , in 2004 . What is striking, however, is the absence of a clear reference to the LP on the Barr campaign's website. David Nolan, the party's co-founder, accuses Barr of avoiding the "L-word" as much as possible. Barr's prominent role for the Libertarian Party is not without a certain piquancy, because in 2002 the LP had described Barr as the "worst drug warrior in Congress".

2008 presidential candidacy

Barr was the Libertarian Party's candidate for the 2008 presidential election and was elected at the party's nomination convention on May 25, 2008 in Denver . He prevailed in the sixth ballot against his opponent Mary Ruwart with 324 to 276 votes. As a vice-presidential candidate, the party decided on a recommendation from Barr for Wayne Allyn Root , who had also tried to run for president. He put his election campaign under the motto "Liberty for America". In 45 states he managed to appear on the ballot paper.

Barr's bid for the Libertarian Party's presidential candidacy met with significant opposition from the party's radical wing. A fake press release was even launched ahead of the convention claiming that Barr, Root and their allies wanted to rename the LP the New Republican Party. After Barr's nomination, party chairman Bill Redpath stated that he would be very surprised and very disappointed if the libertarian pair of candidates did not get the best result - in percentages and total votes - ever. This would have meant the libertarian ticket should have fetched more than Ed Clark and David Koch's 1.1% in 1980. Pre-election polls found that the typical Barr voter is white, male, between 30 and 44 years old, and considers himself “moderate” or “conservative”. Barr said he was not worried that his candidacy could have a negative impact on John McCain in contested states. In this statement Barr takes up the fact that he is more likely to find supporters in the Republican than in the Democratic camp and thus he could play the "spoilsport" for McCain if the election results are tight.

In the election, Barr failed to achieve the result expected by the party leader. With 523,686 votes and a share of 0.4 percent, he even came in fourth, behind the independent candidate Ralph Nader .

Positions

Foreign policy

In terms of foreign policy, Barr is guided by the principle of “non-intervention” and respect for the sovereignty of other nations. Barr stressed that the US should not be the world's policeman and rejects nation-building (nation-building) from. During his election campaign, he described the prospect of military action against Iran as "unnecessary, counterproductive, costly and dangerous". Barr supports a withdrawal of American troops from Iraq, which should be carried out "without undue delay". Barr refuses to announce a timetable for such a withdrawal. Only a "fool" would do this. Barr, however, as a member of Congress, had approved the resolution of October 10, 2002, which legitimized the use of military force against Iraq. Barr later pointed out that the resolution authorized only specific military action, rather than years of occupation at a cost that would cost hundreds of billions of dollars. In addition, the government's justification for the war was wrong. Barr calls "global warming" a "proven fact", but he does not want to commit to the causes of such warming. The Kyoto Protocol was and is rejected by Barr. The foreign policy ideas of the Republican ticket McCain / Palin is seen by Barr as a continuation of what he sees as the wrong policy of the administration of President Bush. Barr accused Senator McCain in a September 2008 press release of having been "even more aggressive" than the Bush administration in dealing with Russia.

Domestic politics

Barr is held in high regard by the National Rifle Association (NRA), which gave his position on gun rights an A-plus, which clearly sets him apart from his fellow candidates in the Democratic and Republican Parties, who received significantly lower ratings. Barr is also a member of the NRA Board of Directors. When it comes to the legality of abortions, Barr defines himself as "pro-life". The federal government should stay out of this question and leave the decision to the states. This could be seen as a certain contrast to the National Platform of the LP from May 2008, because there is no mention of the competences of the states in this matter. Although the platform expresses a certain understanding that different opinions may exist on this sensitive issue, it is ultimately clearly stated that “the government” should stay out of this question. When it comes to recognizing same-sex partnerships, Barr emphasizes the responsibility of states to decide this question autonomously. Barr promises a "dramatic" reduction in federal government spending if he is elected. Spending cuts, Barr said, are the necessary first step before introducing a new tax system. The National Taxpayer's Union (NTU) praised Barr for his tax plans, which called him the most fiscally responsible presidential candidate. Barr did not rate the financial crisis in autumn 2008 as a "crisis of capitalism", but rather saw its cause in the government's "missteps".

supporter

Barr describes himself as a "good friend" of former Republican nominee for president, Ron Paul . Barr said their goals and principles are quite similar. But he respects that Paul wants to work within the Republican Party. In September 2008, Barr surprised the public with the information that he had made Ron Paul the offer to be his "running mate". If so, his actual vice-presidential candidate would step down. Paul had recently asked his supporters to vote for one of the “non-establishment candidates”. He himself had turned down a recommendation for the Republican candidate, John McCain. Finally, on September 22, 2008, Paul announced that he would support Constitution Party candidate Chuck Baldwin. Barr's campaign manager, Russ Verney, said they were not disappointed with Paul's reaction and that he was still confident that he would win Paul's voters for Barr. Barr himself said that Paul's decision baffled him and that it made no sense to him.
