Smyrna is a city in Cobb County in the US state of Georgia with 51,271 inhabitants (as of 2010). She is nicknamed " The Jonquil City ".
geography
Smyrna borders directly on Marietta to the north and is about 10 km northwest of Atlanta .
history
Smyrna goes back to a settlement established at this point in 1832, which was first called Ruffs Siding and later Varners Station . With the connection to the railway in 1842, the place experienced an enormous economic boom. In 1872 the settlement was elevated to the city of Smyrna. In 1946, Lorena Pruitt became the first woman to be elected mayor of a city in the US state of Georgia.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 51,271 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 23,002 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.22 people per household. There are a total of 25,745 households.
52.6% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.01 persons. Children under the age of 18 lived in 28.8% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 13.2% of all households.
24.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 38.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 11.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 34 years. 48.0% of the population were male and 52.0% were female.
53.8% of the population identified themselves as whites , 31.6% as African-Americans , 0.6% as Indians, and 4.9% as Asian Americans . 6.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.1% to several ethnic groups. 14.9% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 64,889 USD , while 12.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.
