Nelson Tift

Nelson Tift (born July 23, 1810 in Groton , Connecticut , †  November 21, 1891 in Albany , Georgia ) was an American politician . Between 1868 and 1869 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1826 Nelson Tift moved to Key West , Florida with his father . Four years later the family moved to Charleston , South Carolina . There Tift began to work in the trade. In 1835 he came to Georgia, where he also worked in commerce. In 1835 he founded the militia of the city of Augusta ( Augusta Guards ). Tift also became the founder of Albany in 1836. There he also became a justice of the peace. Politically, Tift joined the Democratic Party . In 1839 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Georgia constitution. He served on the Baker County County Court in 1840, 1841, and 1849 . Between 1841 and 1852, Tift was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives . From 1845 to 1858 he published the newspaper "Albany Patriot", which he founded.

During the Civil War , Tift served in the Confederate Navy . He was responsible for replenishment. After the re-admission of the state of Georgia to the Union, Tift was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Georgia , where he took up his new mandate on July 25, 1868. By March 3, 1869 he ended the current legislative period of the Congress there . He was confirmed in the elections of 1868. However, the Congress refused its accreditation. In his place, Republican Richard H. Whiteley was elected in the due by-election. Nelson Tift lodged an objection without success.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Tift worked in various economic sectors. Among other things, he was a plantation owner and in the timber business. He also ran flour mills. Tift also oriented itself in the construction sector and in the railway business. In 1877 he was a delegate to another meeting to revise the Georgia state constitution. He died on November 21, 1891 in the city of Albany, which he founded.
