Paul Collins Broun Jr. (born May 14, 1946 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American politician . From 2007 to 2015 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After elementary school, Paul Broun initially served in the United States Marine Corps between 1964 and 1967 . He then studied at the University of Georgia in Athens . After completing a medical degree and licensing as a doctor, he began to work in his new profession.

Politically, Broun joined the Republican Party . After the death of Congressman Charlie Norwood , he was elected in the due by-election for the tenth seat of Georgia as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he took up his new mandate on July 17, 2007. After he was confirmed in the three following elections, he was able to exercise his mandate until January 2015. In the 2010 congressional elections , he received 67% of the vote. The result was the federal trend in favor of the Republican Party. Broun was most recently a member of the Committee on Homeland Security and Science and Technology, as well as several sub-committees in Congress . After the election of Barack Obama as US President , Broun attracted attention several times with derogatory remarks about him.

Broun is married for the fourth time. He has two grown daughters from previous marriages and a teenage son with his current wife, Nikki.

In the run-up to the 2014 Senate elections , Broun declared his candidacy for the seat of the no longer running Saxby Chambliss . In the primary of his party he reached only fifth place with 9.6 percent of the vote. His party's nomination went to David Perdue , who then also won the actual election against Democrat Michelle Nunn and entered Congress on January 3, 2015, which Broun had to leave on the same day.

Political positions

Broun denies global warming and voted against a bill to counteract it. In May 2009, he proposed that 2010 be declared the year of the Bible . In Congress he introduced a bill to regulate morale in military facilities. Broun is a member of the Tea Party Caucus , which represents the interests of the Tea Party movement in the House of Representatives.

He is also a supporter of creationism . At a campaign event in September 2012, he said: "All of the stuff I've been taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang are lies straight from Hell [...] and those lies try, me and everyone else they face." were taught to discourage the knowledge that they need a Savior. ”The earth is 9,000 years old and was created by God in six days. Before Obama's 2008 election, Broun attracted attention by comparing Obama to Stalin and Hitler. His spokesman emphasized that Broun would not apologize for this. He assigned the Council on American-Islamic Relations to support terrorists. In 2010 he accused Obama of rejecting the US Constitution and being a socialist. Paul Broun did not directly admit to the Birther movement, a movement that seeks to prove that Obama is not a US citizen. However, he refused to answer yes to the question of whether Obama was a US citizen. He doesn't know. In 2011 he was asked the question at a campaign event: “Who is going to shoot Obama?” (English for: Who will shoot Obama?). He compared the introduction of Obamacare with the American Civil War , which he called the Great War of Yankee Aggression (English for: The great war of aggression of the Yankees).

criticism

In response to Broun's remarks against the theory of evolution , 5,000 voters in the 10th district voted Charles Darwin as a so-called write-in candidate in the 2012 House of Representatives elections .
