The United States House Committee on Homeland Security is a standing committee of the United States House of Representatives . The current chairman is Bennie Thompson ( D - MS ), opposition leader ( ranking member ) is Mike Rogers ( R - AL )
history
The committee was founded on June 19, 2002 by the 107th Congress and initially only had the task of developing proposals for the establishment of a Department of Homeland Security against the background of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . In the next legislative period ( 108th Congress ) the mandate was renewed, since parliamentary oversight of the Department's activities was required after the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security . The committee finally gained permanent status on January 4, 2005.
Area of responsibility
The House Committee on Homeland Security is tasked with processing, approving, or rejecting bills affecting US security. The committee also has the right to hold safety hearings and to summon witnesses.
