Jack Thomas Brinkley (born December 22, 1930 in Faceville , Decatur County , Georgia - † January 23, 2019 in Columbus , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1983 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jack Brinkley attended the public schools in his home country and then studied at Young Harris College until 1949 . Between 1949 and 1951 he worked as a teacher. He was then a pilot in the US Air Force from 1951 to 1956 . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Georgia and his admission as a lawyer in 1959, he began to work in Columbus in his new profession.

Politically, Brinkley joined the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives in 1965 and 1966 . In the 1966 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Howard H. Callaway on January 3, 1967 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . During this time, the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and the Watergate affair took place . In Congress, Brinkley was considered conservative. That was true of most of the Southern Democratic MPs at the time.

In 1982 Brinkley declined to run again. After leaving the US House of Representatives, he withdrew from politics. Most recently he lived in Columbus.
