Gordon Lee

Gordon Lee (born May 29, 1859 in Ringgold , Catoosa County , Georgia , † November 7, 1927 in Chickamauga , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1905 and 1927 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gordon Lee attended public schools in his home country and then studied at Emory College , Oxford until 1880 . He then worked in agriculture and crafts in Chickamauga. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives in 1894 and 1895 ; from 1902 to 1904 he was a member of the State Senate . He was also a member of the Georgia State Memorial Board .

In the 1904 congressional election , Lee was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded John W. Maddox on March 4, 1905 . After ten re-elections, he was able to complete eleven consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1927 . During this time, the First World War and the adoption of the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution took place . Lee was a member of the National Forest Reservation Commission created in 1911 . In 1924 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York , where John W. Davis was nominated as a presidential candidate.

After leaving the US House of Representatives in March 1927, Gordon Lee returned to farming. He died on November 7th of the same year in Chickamauga, where he was buried.
