Henry R. Harris

Henry Richard Harris (born February 2, 1828 in Sparta , Hancock County , Georgia , †  October 15, 1909 in Odessadale , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1879 and again from 1885 to 1887 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Harris came to Greenville in Meriwether County as early as 1833 . He attended a primary school in Mount Zion and then studied until 1847 at Emory College , Oxford . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1861 Harris was a delegate to a meeting to revise his home state's constitution. During the Civil War he was Colonel in the army of the Confederacy .

In the congressional election of 1872 Harris was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Erasmus W. Beck on March 4, 1873 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1879 . In the elections of 1878 he was defeated by Henry Persons . In 1884 Harris was re-elected to Congress, where he replaced Hugh Buchanan on March 4, 1885 . Since he refused to run again in 1886, he could only spend one more term in the US House of Representatives until March 3, 1887.

After leaving Congress, Henry Richards was named Secretary of State in the Department of Post ( Third Assistant Postmaster General ). He held this office between April 1, 1887 and March 18, 1889. Then Harris dealt with, among other things, agricultural matters. He died on October 15, 1909 in Odessadale and was buried in Greenville.
