Richard Belmont Ray (born February 2, 1927 in Fort Valley , Crawford County , Georgia - †  May 29, 1999 in Macon , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1983 and 1993 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Richard Ray attended public schools in his home country including Crawford County High School , which he graduated in 1944. Between 1944 and 1946 he served in the final stages of World War II in the US Navy . He then worked as a farmer from 1946 to 1950 and then as a businessman until 1972. Politically, Belmont became a member of the Democratic Party . From 1964 to 1970 he served as Mayor of Perry , Houston County . In 1969 he was President of the Georgia Municipal Association . Ray served on Senator Sam Nunn's staff between 1972 and 1982 .

In the 1982 congressional election , Ray was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Jack Thomas Brinkley on January 3, 1983 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . In the 1992 elections he was defeated by Republican Mac Collins .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Ray retired from politics. He lived in Byron and in Alexandria ( Virginia ). Richard Ray died in Macon on May 29, 1999.
