Phil Gingrey

John Phillip "Phil" Gingrey (born July 10, 1942 in Augusta , Georgia ) is an American politician . From 2003 to 2015 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After attending St. Thomas Aquinas High School , Phil Gingrey studied chemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology until 1965 and then medicine at the Medical College of Georgia until 1969 . He then worked as an obstetrician. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1993 and 1997 he was a member of the Marietta City Education Committee . He was a member of the Georgia Senate from 1999 to 2002 .

In the 2002 congressional elections , he was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Georgia in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded John Linder on January 3, 2003 . After five re-elections, he exercised his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2015. Gingrey was most recently a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and three of its sub-committees. He also held several positions in the leadership of the Republican Congress Group.

The opinionated conservatives came in January 2013, the national headlines when he controversial statements about rape ( "legitimate rape") to which the US Senate candidate Todd Akin of Missouri . Had failed, defended as "partially accurate"

On March 27, 2013 Phil Gingrey announced in the party's internal code ( Primary ) to the vacant seat in the Senate in the election in 2014 to want to apply, the result of the announced in January 2013. withdrawal of the Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss was released . With Jack Kingston and Paul Broun , two other congressmen had the same goal. Ultimately, Gingrey only finished fourth in the primary with 10.03 percent of the vote. Gingrey is married and has four children.
