William Sanford "Bill" Nye (born November 27, 1955 in Washington, DC ) is an American television presenter and author who began his career as a mechanical engineer at Boeing . A broad public, Nye is best known as the presenter of the children's science program Bill Nye the Science Guy (1993-1998).

Nye first studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1977. To this day, he has occasionally given guest lectures at Cornell University. As a mechanical engineer, he was involved in the development of hydraulic systems that are still installed in the Boeing 747 today. In the early 2000s, he helped design a sundial that was used as part of the Mars Exploration Rover space mission and that enabled color calibration through specially marked fields. From 2005 to 2010 he was vice chairman and since 2010 he has been chairman of The Planetary Society , a non-profit organization that promotes the exploration of the solar system, among other things. According to his own account, Nye applied for several unsuccessful applications to NASA as an astronaut .

Career as a moderator

Nye began his entertainment career as a performer on the comedy television program Almost Live! . There he played Bill Nye the Science Guy for the first time and another character named Speedwalker , a fast-moving superhero from Seattle .

In the animated series Back to the Future , he appeared in the real film segment as the silent assistant to Doc Brown ( Christopher Lloyd ).

He became a US celebrity with Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science show for children. The show was canceled after 5 seasons with a total of 100 episodes. In the years that followed, Nye was involved in numerous TV formats and appeared on shows as a guest. 2013 for example in the 142nd episode of The Big Bang Theory .

He worked on the video Could We Stop An Asteroid? For the scientific YouTube channel AsapScience . with discussing different ways humanity could stop an asteroid if a collision with Earth were imminent.

His public debate with Ken Ham , a representative of young earth creationism and president of the controversial organization Answers in Genesis , caused a worldwide media response .

Since April 2017, Nye has hosted the program Bill Nye Saves the World on Netflix .
