Jack Kemp

Jack French Kemp Jr. (born July 13, 1935 in Los Angeles , California - † May 2, 2009 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician and American football player .

Athletic career

As a quarterback , he played for 13 years from 1957 to 1970 in the National Football League (NFL), the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the American Football League (AFL).

Political career

Kemp sat from 1971 to 1989 for the US state of New York in the United States House of Representatives . In 1988 he applied for the nomination as the Republican presidential candidate , but had no chance against the future US President George HW Bush . This appointed him to his cabinet, in which Kemp worked from 1989 to 1993 as Minister of Construction . In the 1996 presidential campaign , he was Bob Dole's running mate , the candidate for vice-president. Kemp always referred to himself as a bleeding heart conservative (English for: compassionate conservative). Paul Ryan , later running mate of Mitt Romney in the 2012 election campaign, called Kemp a mentor. In the 1996 election campaign, Ryan had worked as Kemp's speechwriter.

Jack Kemp was married to Joanne Main; they had two sons and two daughters.

Awards

He received the MVP Award in 1965 as captain of the Buffalo Bills .
