Joseph J. O'Brien
Joseph John O'Brien (born October 9, 1897 in Rochester , New York , † January 23, 1953 ) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1945 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Joseph O'Brien attended public schools in his home country and SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic School and Cathedral High School , also in Rochester. He then graduated from St. Jerome's College in Ontario ( Canada ) and McGill University in Montreal . In the years 1917-1919 he served during the First World War in the US Navy . Between 1919 and 1938 he was senior construction inspector for the New York Central Railroad . From 1919 to 1925 he was also a professional football player and heavyweight wrestler. From 1932 to 1935 he served as a treasurer in East Rochester . After that he was employed as an assessor at this city until 1938. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .
In the 1938 congressional election , O'Brien was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 38th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Democrat George B. Kelly on January 3, 1939 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1945 . The Roosevelt government's last New Deal laws were passed there by 1941 . Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of World War II .
In 1944, Joseph O'Brien was not re-elected. From June 1, 1945 until his death, he was the district administrator of the New York State Compensation Board . He was also Vice President of General Sheet Signal Co. He died on January 23, 1953 in Rochester, where he was also buried.
