Daniel Alden Reed (born September 15, 1875 in Sheridan , Chautauqua County , New York , †  February 19, 1959 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1919 and 1959 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Daniel Reed attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1898 at Cornell University in Ithaca . He was also a successful college football coach while in school . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1900, he began to work in Silver Creek and later in Dunkirk in this profession. From 1903 to 1909 he worked legally for the state government. In 1917 and 1918 he was sent on a special mission to France by the German government during the First World War . He later became one of the directors of the Dunkirk Trust Co. He also gave lectures on the subject of trade, among other things.

Politically, Reed joined the Republican Party . In the 1918 congressional election he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington in the 43rd  constituency of New York, where he succeeded Charles Mann Hamilton on March 4, 1919 . After 20 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on February 19, 1959 . The 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution were ratified in 1919 and 1920 . It was about the ban on trade in alcoholic beverages and the nationwide introduction of women's suffrage . Since 1933, the Roosevelt government passed the New Deal laws . In 1935 the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd. Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of World War II .

After this war, Reed saw the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and the beginning of the civil rights movement . From 1945 to 1953 he represented the 45th constituency in Congress, which only existed during this period. He then returned to the 43rd District. During his long tenure as a MP, Daniel Reed chaired several committees. From 1923 to 1925 he headed the Committee on Industrial Arts and Expositions , from 1925 to 1931 the Education Committee and from 1953 to 1955 the Committee on Ways and Means At the same time, he chaired the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation . In the years after World War II, he represented the United States at four Inter-Parliamentary Union conferences in Italy , Sweden , Switzerland and France .
