Henry P. Smith III (born September 29, 1911 in North Tonawanda , Niagara County , New York , †  October 1, 1995 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1975 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Smith attended his homeland public schools and then the Nichols School in Buffalo . In 1933 he graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover ( New Hampshire ). After a subsequent law degree at Cornell University in Ithaca and his admission as a lawyer in 1936, he began to work in this profession in Ithaca. In 1941, he moved his residence and law firm to North Tonawanda. He was also mayor there between 1961 and 1963. In 1961, he was also a family judge in Niagara County. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the 1964 congressional election , Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 40th  constituency of New York, where he succeeded William E. Miller on January 3, 1965 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1975 . Since 1973 he has represented the 36th district of his state there as the successor to Frank Horton . His time as a congressman was shaped by the events of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War, as well as the 1974 Watergate affair . In 1974 he renounced another candidacy.

Between 1975 and 1978, Henry Smith served as chairman of the International Joint Commission , which deals with water issues between the United States and Canada . He was also director and executive director of the Association to Unite the Democracies . He died on October 1, 1995 in Washington, where he was also buried.
