Alfred Florian Beiter (born July 7, 1894 in Clarence , Erie County , New York , †  March 11, 1974 in Boca Raton , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1939 and again from 1941 to 1943 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alfred Beiter attended the public schools of his home country and Williamsville High School . He then studied at Niagara University in Niagara Falls . Between 1915 and 1929 he worked in Williamsville in trade. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . From 1930 to 1933 he was mayor of Amherst .

In the 1932 congressional election , Beiter was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 41st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Edmund F. Cooke on March 4, 1933 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1939 . During this time, many of the Roosevelt government's New Deal laws were passed there. In 1935 the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd. From 1937 Beiter was chairman of the Committee on War Claims .

In 1938 Alfred Beiter was defeated by the Republican J. Francis Harter . In 1939 and 1940 he worked for the US Department of the Interior . In the elections of 1940 he was re-elected to Congress in the 41st district of his state, where he replaced Francis Harter on January 3, 1941. Since he was not confirmed in 1942, he could only spend one more term in the US House of Representatives until January 3, 1943, which was marked by the events of the Second World War .

Between 1944 and 1948 Alfred Beiter ran a hatchery in Buffalo . He also worked in the feed business. From 1949 to 1961 he was President of the National Customs Service Association . He was then employed by the US Treasury Department as deputy head of the customs department until 1964 . He then went into retirement, which he spent in Boca Raton. He died there on March 11, 1974.
