Archie D. Sanders

Archie Dovell Sanders (born June 17, 1857 in Stafford , Genesee County , New York , †  July 15, 1941 in Rochester , New York) was an American politician . Between 1917 and 1933 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Archie Sanders attended his home public schools and Le Roy Academy and Buffalo Central High School . In 1873 he was working in his father's farm in Stafford, which produced agricultural products. Between 1894 and 1895 he was Highway Commissioner in Stafford. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was a delegate to many regional Republican party conventions. In 1896 and 1924 he also took part in the respective Republican National Conventions , at which William McKinley and Calvin Coolidge were nominated as presidential candidates. Between 1898 and 1913, Sanders headed the 28th Federal Tax District for New York. In 1895 and 1896 he was a member of the New York State Assembly ; from 1914 to 1915 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the 1916 congressional election , Sanders was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 39th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Henry G. Danforth on March 4, 1917 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1933 . During this time the First World War fell . In addition, the 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution were ratified in 1919 and 1920 . It was about the ban on the trade in alcoholic beverages and the nationwide introduction of women's suffrage . Since 1929 the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of the Great Depression. Between 1929 and 1931 Sanders chaired the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads . In 1932 he renounced another candidacy.

After serving in the US House of Representatives, Archie Sanders returned to Stafford. At the time of his death on July 15, 1941, he was Republican District Chairman in Genesee County.
