Kenneth Keating
Kenneth Barnard Keating (born May 18, 1900 in Lima , New York , † May 5, 1975 in New York City ) was an American lawyer , diplomat and politician . For many years he was a member of the United States House of Representatives and Senator for New York State .
After high school, Keating attended the University of Rochester , where he graduated in 1919 before moving to Harvard Law School . After completing his legal training, Keating practiced in Rochester . During the First World War he served as a sergeant in the US Army , in the Second World War he held the rank of brigadier general. After Keating returned from the war, he returned to his legal practice.
In 1947 he was elected a Republican to the 80th Congress and was re-elected five times by January 1959. In 1958 he also defeated his rival Frank Hogan in the fight for the seat as Senator from New York, which was given up by Republican Irving Ives . Keating held the senatorial office from January 3, 1959 to January 2, 1965. He ran for re-election in 1964, but was defeated by aspiring Democrat Robert F. Kennedy . After retiring from the Senate, he was elected as a judge to the New York Court of Appeals . He then worked as the United States' ambassador to India (1969–1972) and Israel (from 1973) until his death in 1975 . He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
In 1974 his daughter Barbara Keating tried unsuccessfully to be elected to the Senate as the New York Conservative Party candidate .
