Frank Horton

Frank Jefferson Horton (born December 12, 1919 in Cuero , Texas , †  August 30, 2004 in Winchester , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1963 and 1993 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Frank Horton attended public schools in Baton Rouge ( Louisiana ) and then studied until 1941 at the Louisiana State University there . From 1941 to 1945 he served in the US Army during World War II . After a subsequent law degree at Cornell University in Ithaca and his admission to the bar in 1947, he began to work in this profession. Between 1956 and 1962 he was also President of Rochester Community Baseball, Inc , now Rochester Red Wings . Between 1959 and 1961 he was also vice president of the International League . He also worked as a lawyer for this baseball league.

Politically, Horton joined the Republican Party . Between 1955 and 1961 he was a member of Rochester City Council . In the 1962 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 36th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Taber on January 3, 1963 . After 14 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 15 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . He changed his constituency twice. Until 1973 he represented the 36th, then until 1983 the 34th and finally the 29th district in Congress. In the meantime he was a member of the Government Operations Committee . His time in Congress included the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and, in 1974, the Watergate affair . Horton was considered a moderate Republican who belonged to the Rockefeller wing of his party.

In 1992, Frank Horton renounced another congressional candidacy. He died in Winchester on August 30, 2004 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
