The Rochester Red Wings are a minor league baseball team from Rochester , New York that play in the International League (IL) in the North Division. The Red Wings are the Minnesota Twins' level AAA minor league team and play their home games at Frontier Field in Rochester with a capacity of 13,500.
history
The Rochester Red Wings were founded in 1899, making them the oldest minor league franchise in North America. The franchise has changed its nickname several times and has only been named Red Wings since 1929. Before that, they ran as the Bronchos (1899-1907), Hustlers (1908-1920), Colts (1921) and Tribe (1922-1928).
Before the Red Wings were the Minnesota Twins minor league team in 2003, they belonged to two other MLB organizations in their history, namely the St. Louis Cardinals (1929-1960) and the Baltimore Orioles (1961-2002).
Rochester has won 20 minor league titles so far, 10 of them in the International League. This makes them, together with the Columbus Clippers , record holders in the league. The last time the Red Wings succeeded in doing this was in 1997.
The Red Wings are part of the longest game in baseball history. On April 18, 1981, the game against the Pawtucket Red Sox in the 32nd inning at the score of 2: 2 was canceled and only continued on June 23, 1981, when Rochester made another guest appearance. Pawtucket scored in the first inning and decided the game for themselves. So the winner was not determined until the 33rd inning.
