The Syracuse Mets are a minor league baseball team from Syracuse , New York, which plays in the International League (IL) in the North Division. The Mets are currently the level AAA minor league team of the New York Mets and play their home games in the 11,000-seat NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse. From 1934 to 2018 the club was called Syracuse Chiefs, interrupted by the name Syracuse SkyChiefs from 1997 to 2006.

history

The Chiefs were founded in 1934. They played in the International League until 1956. By 1961, Syracuse no longer had a professional baseball team.

Over time, the Chiefs moved as a farm team to many different MLB teams, including the New York Yankees and for a long time the Toronto Blue Jays , before being subordinate to the Washington Nationals in 2009 to this day .

From 1997 they also ran under the name Syracuse SkyChiefs for a short time, but this was changed back to their original name, the Chiefs, in 2006.

After the then General Manager John Simone took office in 1997, only one person could qualify for the playoffs, but he was finally relieved of any duties in 2013. Since then Jason Smorol has been responsible as General Manager. Under his leadership, the Chiefs made it into the playoff semifinals in 2014 in his first year in office, where the Best-Of-5 series was lost 3-0 to the Pawtucket Red Sox . Since this participation, however, there has been no further playoff participation.

In 2016, the round was finished in sixth and last place in the North Division. The financial situation of the club makes it even more difficult. The team owner has already flirted with a sale several times. In 2016, it was announced that the Chiefs had approached Onondaga County , the landlord of the arena, to reduce rental and utility costs for the arena.

The team has been part of the New York Mets franchise since 2019 and has been renamed Syracuse Mets.

Stadion

NBT Bank Stadium (since 1997)

The Syracuse Chiefs have played at the 11,000-seat NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse since 1997. The stadium belongs to Onondaga County and is therefore only rented by the Chiefs.

In 2003 the then Syracuse football club, the Syracuse Salty Dogs , was founded and also ran in the NBT Bank Stadium. Although the team attracted a great deal of spectator interest, there were repeated clashes between the owners of the Chiefs' baseball team and Onondaga County. Finally, the owner of the Salty Dogs surprisingly filed for bankruptcy in 2004 and the football club was dissolved after only 2 years.

Country star Bob Dylan performed at NBT Bank Stadium in 2007 .

In 2009, the rival team of the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre RailRiders had to play some of their home games in the Chiefs stadium, as Scranton had problems with drainage problems on the field of their venue.

MacArthur Stadium (1936-1996)

Previously, the home games from 1936 to 1996 were played at MacArthur Stadium, which was then demolished.
