The Louisville Bats are a minor league - baseball team from Louisville , Kentucky , which in the International League plays (IL) in the West Division. The Bats are currently the level AAA minor league team of the Cincinnati Reds and play their home games in the approximately 13,000-seat Louisville Slugger Field.

history

The Louisville Bats were formed in 1982 after the Springfield Redbirds moved from Springfield to Louisville. From then on, the team was called Louisville Redbirds until 1997. In 1998 the name was first changed to Louisville RiverBats, the second and to date the last one in 2002 to Louisville Bats.

Over time, the Bats moved on as a farm team to various MLB teams. After 15 years under the St. Louis Cardinals umbrella and two years with the Milwaukee Brewers , the Bats have been subordinate to the Cincinnati Reds since 2000 .

In the 80s, the Bats were repeatedly brought up as a potential MLB location due to their sporting success. However, the plans were never realized.

In 2016, Forbes recognized the Louisville Bats as the 11th most valuable minor league baseball club in the United States for $ 36 million.

Louisville Slugger Field (since 2000)

The Bats are currently playing their home games at Louisville Slugger Field, which holds 13,131 spectators.

The stadium opened on April 12, 2000. The first game took place on April 23 of the same year when the Indianapolis Indians were visiting.

The stadium has been used by Louisville City FC , a United Soccer League football club, since 2015 .

Cardinal Stadium (1982-1999)

Former stadium of the Bats was the Cardinal Stadium with a capacity of over 47,000 seats. The main tenants besides the Bats were the Louisville Cardinals , the Louisville university team in American football.

In 2000, however, the Bats decided to move to their own stadium, as there were repeated appointments with the university football and baseball clubs or concerts.

In 1989 the Rolling Stones played a concert as part of their Steel Wheel Tour at Cardinal Stadium.
