The Pawtucket Red Sox are a minor league - baseball team from Pawtucket , Rhode Iceland , which plays in the International League (IL) in the North Division. The Red Sox are currently the Level AAA minor league team of the Boston Red Sox and play their home games in the McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, which has a capacity of around 12,000 .

history

The Red Sox was founded in 1970. Since their inception, they have been subordinate to the organization of the Boston Red Sox MLB team. Except for the 1976 season when the Rhode Island Red Sox was called, the team name was never changed.

The Red Sox are part of the longest game in baseball history. On April 18, 1981, the game against the Rochester Red Wings in the 32nd inning at the score of 2: 2 was canceled and only continued on June 23 of the same year, when Rochester visited again. The Red Sox scored in the first inning and decided the game for themselves. So the winner was not determined until the 33rd inning. Also present were the current Hall-of-Famers Jr Cal Ripken, . and Wade Boggs .

Pawtucket has won four minor league titles in its history, three of them in the International League. The last time they did this was in 2014.

In 2015 and 2016 they finished sixth and fourth in the North Division and missed the playoffs.

In May 2017, it was announced that the City of Pawtucket and the Red Sox are planning a new stadium for $ 83 million. The Red Sox would have the security of keeping their franchise in Pawtucket until at least 2050.

Stadion

Since it was founded in 1970, the Red Sox have played in the 11,982-seat McCoy Stadium. The stadium cost around $ 1.5 million back then, which would be about $ 22 million today. In 1998 the stadium was renovated for then $ 15 million and increased from 6,000 to around 12,000 seats.
