Calvin Edwin "Cal" Ripken Jr. (born August 24, 1960 in Havre de Grace , Maryland ) is a former American baseball player who played from 1981 to 2001 in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Baltimore Orioles . His positions were shortstop and third baseman . His father Cal Ripken Sen. and brother Billy Ripken were also players with the Orioles.

He is best known for being the Iron Man of Baseball, having played 2,632 games in a row for the Orioles from May 30, 1982 to September 20, 1998. He exceeded the 56-year-old record of Lou Gehrig , who played 2130 games in a row. He played a total of 3,001 games.

On January 9, 2007, Ripken was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame with 98.5% of the possible votes. He has the fifth highest percentage of votes of any player in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Today Cal Ripken Jr. owns two teams in the minor leagues . The Aberdeen Iron Birds and the Augusta Green Jackets . He also runs the marketing company "Ripken Baseball", which aims to make the sport of baseball known worldwide.
