MLB Rookie of the Year Award
The Rookie of the Year Award of the Major League Baseball is awarded annually to the best player who has played his first full year in the professional league. As usual, the award is presented twice. Accordingly, one rookie of the year in the American League and one in the National League will be honored.
Only twice in history has a player been voted Most Valuable Player in their first year in addition to the Rookie of the Year Award . Fred Lynn was the first player to do this in 1975. The same was done in 2001 by the Japanese baseball star Ichirō Suzuki , who was considered a rookie, although he had previously played professional baseball in Japan. The only rookie who managed to win the Cy Young Award in addition to the Rookie of the Year Award was Fernando Valenzuela in 1981.
Who is a rookie?
In order to be considered a rookie and thus qualify for the award, a player must not have achieved the following values before the current season:
- 130 at bats or 50 innings as a pitcher in the MLB
- 45 days in the roster of an MLB team
