biography
Orlando Cepedo was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. His father Pedro Cepeda was a famous baseball player in the Caribbean and was sometimes referred to as Babe Ruth of the Caribbean . Cepedo made his debut as first baseman in the National League with the San Francisco Giants on April 15, 1958. In his very first game, he hit a home run and helped his team defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers with their pitcher Don Drysdale . In total, he had 25 home runs and 38 doubles in his first year. His batting average was 31.2%. Cepeda was named Rookie of the Year in the National League.
In 1961 he led the National League in home runs and RBI . A year later, the Giants won the title in the NL and played against the New York Yankees in the World Series , in which they were, however, defeated in five games. In 1966 he was transferred to the St. Louis Cardinals .
With the Cardinals, Cepeda won the championship in the NL and the title win in the World Series against the Boston Red Sox . With a batting average of 32.5% and 111 RBI, Cepeda was elected MVP of the National League, the first unanimous decision since Carl Hubbel was elected in 1936.
Other stops in his career were the Atlanta Braves , Oakland Athletics , Kansas City Royals and the Red Sox. In Boston, Cepeda was the team's first designated hitter . Cepeda played his last game on September 19, 1974. He was called seven times in his career in the All-Star game . His career hit average was 29.7% with 397 home runs and 1,365 RBI in 17 seasons.
After his career, he was convicted of marijuana smuggling at San Juan airport and sentenced to prison. This is considered to be the reason why Cepeda was appointed to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1999 .
