Billy Leo Williams , nickname Sweet Swingin 'Billy from Whistler , (born June 15, 1938 in Whistler , Alabama ) is a retired American baseball player who was active in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1959 to 1976 . He played his first game on August 6, 1959 for the Chicago Cubs . During his entire time with the Cubs, for which he was later elected to the All-Century Team of the Cubs, he could never reach the postseason . In his last two years with the Oakland Athletics , he managed to reach the playoffs.

In 1987, Billy Williams was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame .

The number 26 is no longer awarded by the Chicago Cubs.
