Peter Morgan Alonso (born December 7, 1994 in Tampa , Florida ) nicknamed Polar Bear, is an American baseball player who is a first baseman in Major League Baseball for the New York Mets . After his first MLB season in 2019, he was voted Rookie of the Year in the National League and, with 53 home runs as a rookie, replaced the previous record holder Aaron Judge (52) in these statistics.

Career

Minor Leagues

Pete Alonso was selected by the New York Mets in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft and played on various minor league teams in the franchise from 2016 to June 2018 . His last minor league season in 2018, when he played first with the Las Vegas 51s and then with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies , he finished with 36 home runs and a batting average of 0.285.

Major League Baseball

From the start of the 2019 season , Alonso was used as a starter for the Mets on first base. On April 1, he managed his first major league home run against the Miami Marlins . Alonso was nominated for the MLB All-Star Game 2019 on July 9th and scored two RBIs for the National League team. He also won the home run derby, where he beat Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the final with 23:22 home runs. On September 28, Alonso scored his 53rd home run of the current season, setting a new MLB record for most rookie home runs. The day before he had set Aaron Judge's (52) record . In the course of the season Alonso came to 161 appearances, where he reached 103 runs and a batting average of 0.260 and was chosen due to his performance as the sixth player in the history of the Mets for Rookie of the Year of the National League.
