Dustin Luis Pedroia (born August 17, 1983 in Woodland , California ), a descendant of immigrants from Minusio , is an American baseball player . Since 2006 he has played in the position of second baseman for the Boston Red Sox in the American League of Major League Baseball . In the course of his still young career, Pedroia has already achieved several awards and successes. For example, he was named MLB Rookie of the Year 2007 and MVP of the American League in 2008. With his team, Pedroia was able to win the 2007 World Series in his first full season as a professional .
Major League career
2006
Pedroia made his debut on August 22, 2006 in the game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim , in which he managed his first hit. On September 9 of that year, he managed his first home run in the game against the Kansas City Royals . However, due to the few appearances in 2006, he was only officially considered a rookie the following year.
2007
In the 2007 season, Pedroia was a regular at second base. Defensively, he played a good season with six errors and a fielding percentage of 99%. Pedroia's offensive performance increased significantly after a relatively weak start in the course of the season, so that after the end of the regular season he was able to show a batting average of .317.
Pedroia was named Rookie of the Year in the American League following the season.
In the American League Division Series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Pedroia weakened a bit, so that he only got 2 hits in 3 games in the series. In the subsequent American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Indians, Pedroia increased significantly and was instrumental in the Red Sox's entry into the 2007 World Series . In the decisive seventh game he managed, among other things, a 2-run home run.
In the 2007 World Series against the Colorado Rockies , Pedroia became the first rookie in history, and the second player ever, to open a World Series with a home run at the first at-bat. The Red Sox won the series 4-0 and Pedroia posted a batting average of .278 with five hits, one home run and four RBIs in the World Series.
2008
Pedroia achieved a batting average of .326 in the 2008 season. He got 17 home runs and 83 RBIs. He was able to steal 20 bases and was the first player since Cal Ripken 1983 to top the three offensive stats Hits, Doubles and Runs Scored and was voted MVP of the American League after the season . He also won the American League's Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards for second base. Pedroia is only the third player in Major League Baseball history to win the Rookie of the Year Award and the Most Valuable Player Award for two consecutive seasons. Before him, only Cal Ripken and Ryan Howard could do this .
In the play-offs of 2008 Pedroia increased in the course of the players after again an average start. In the American League Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays , he reached nine hits in 26 at-bats, including three home runs. His excellent batting average of .346 couldn't prevent the Red Sox from losing to Tampa Bay, as the entire team was not strong enough to reach the 2008 World Series with a batting average of .234 .
Private
Pedroia has been married to Kelli Hatley since November 11, 2006. He is the nephew of Phil Snow , a trainer for the Detroit Lions in the NFL .
