Woodland (formerly By Hell and Yolo City ) is a city in Yolo County , of which it is the county seat , in California . According to the United States Census Bureau, it had 55,468 residents in 2010 . It is located about 20 km north of Sacramento and is considered a northern suburb.

Woodland's beginnings go back to 1850 when California was made a state and Yolo County was founded. The city received a post office, and a year later the county seat was moved from Washington - now West Sacramento - because Washington was flooded. With its proximity to Sacramento and the construction of the railroad, Woodland became a thriving agricultural community.

Infrastructure and traffic

Woodland is served by a county bus system known as YOLOBUS . Several bus services run from Woodland to Sacramento , Davis and other areas within the county. Two highways - State Route 113 and Interstate 5 connect the city to the trunk road network. The local road network is based on the US survey grid.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Woodland was inhabited by 49,151 people. The population density was 1840.7 people per km ². The Woodlands population was 66.84% White , 1.28% Black or African American , 1.46% Native American , 3.77% Asian , 0.28% Pacific Islander , 21.50% said other races belong to and 4.88% named two or more races. 38.83% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Woodland were distributed to 16,751 households out of which 40.1% were living in children under 18 years of age. 54.8% of households were married, 12.9% had a female head of the household without a husband and 26.7% were not families. 21.0% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.4% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.37 people.

The population was divided into 29.7% minors, 9.6% 18–24 year olds, 30.3% 25–44 year olds, 19.9% ​​45–64 year olds and 10.5% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 women there were 96.2 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 92.5 men.

Woodland was incorporated as a city and is administered by a five-member city council headed by the mayor . City councilors and mayors are each elected for four years. The deputy mayor is appointed by the city council member who received the highest number of votes in the election. He will swap positions with the mayor in the second half of the term. The administration of the city with its current 376 permanent employees is led by a city director.

Woodland is part of the 5th electoral district of the California Senate and the 8th constituency of the California State Assembly . At the federal level, the city is located in California's First Congressional District .

There are several small museums in Woodland. The Heidrick Ag History Center is a kind of agricultural museum. It shows rare and unique agricultural equipment from the end of the 19th to the middle of the 20th century. The Hays Antique Truck Museum, on the other hand, features over a hundred different trucks that were collected and restored by Wayne Hays, a former truck driver.

Another museum is the Yolo County Historical Museum, located on the three-acre property owned by William and Mary Gibson, a pioneering couple from Woodlands. Construction on their home, which is on the National Register of Historic Places , began in 1857. The museum acquired the property in 1975. It houses furnishings and artifacts dating from the 1850s to the 1930s. The Gibson Mansion shows the daily life of this era, but also changing exhibitions on the history of Yolo County.

The Woodland Public Library was founded as a library with funds from Andrew Carnegie and built in 1905. It is the oldest Carnegie Library in California that is still operating.

The Woodland Opera House is a California Historical Landmark and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1885 and was rebuilt in the same location from 1895 to 1896 after a fire. John Philip Sousa , Verna Felton and Helena Modjeska performed in this first opera house in the Sacramento Valley . The theater was not used for most of the 20th century, but after renovations it is now used for theatrical and musical performances.
