The Gibson Manson in Woodland

The Gibson Mansion (now serving as the Yolo County Historical Museum ) is a historic mansion in Woodland , California . It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since November 7, 1976 .

history

William Byas Gibson came to Yolo County from Virginia and settled at this point, which was then outside of Woodland, in 1850 to do arable and quadruped farming. In 1857 he bought 128 acres of land south of Woodland  on which there was a small house. This property later became the focus of his 1,200 hectares of real estate. As his family grew and their fortunes increased, he expanded the house several times in the 1870s and converted it into a mansion. Gibson died in 1901 and his family lived there until 1963. Until 1975 nobody took care of the property and the surrounding land, so the building slowly fell into disrepair. During this time the house was declared a haunted house by some. In 1975, the Yolo County Historical Society managed to purchase the home and an acre of the property to renovate it and create a county history museum. The Yolo County Historical Museum Association was formed, through which the museum is now operated. The museum is open to the public on weekends.

The rooms of the Gibson Mansion display furniture and historical objects dating from between the 1850s and 1930s. Temporary exhibitions are dedicated to the history of Yolo County. There is also a working blacksmith shop and barn on the site, which houses working historical logging tools and agricultural implements.
