biography
Carlton Fisk was born in Vermont but grew up in Charlestown , New Hampshire . There he graduated from high school and then attended the University of New Hampshire , for which he played baseball and basketball . In 1967 the Boston Red Sox signed him in a draft . Fisk was the fourth player to be selected in the entire process. His first game for the Red Sox, he played on 18 September 1969 a full member of the team, he was however only in 1972. This year he had a batting average of 29.3%, hit 22 home runs and led the American League with nine triples . To this day he is the last catcher to head this category. That year he won the Gold Glove Award and was named Rookie of the Year in the American League. In the years that followed, Fisk always struggled with injuries and often missed a large part of the season.
In 1975, after an injury in preparation, he started his season in June. After his return, the Red Sox took over the championship lead of the AL East after a week and were able to celebrate the championship in the American League. In the World Series , the Red Sox met the Cincinnati Reds . In the sixth game of the series, Fisk hit a ball thrown by Pat Darcy in the 12th inning at the foul pole at Fenway Park to win 7-6 in one of the most dramatic games in World Series history. In memory of this blow, the Foul Pole in Boston was often referred to as the Fisk Pole .
1977 and 1978 were again very good years for Fisk. He fought with Thurman Munson of the Yankees for the title of best catcher in baseball. Fisk was nominated twice as a starter catcher in the All-Star Game , but the Yankees won the American League championship in both years and the World Series in both years.
After the 1980 season, Fisk became a free agent and, to the surprise of Boston fans, joined the Chicago White Sox . With the White Sox he won the 1983 American League West title, but they were defeated in the American League Championship Series by the Baltimore Orioles in four games. Carlton Fisk played his last game for the White Sox on June 22, 1993 at the age of 45.
Carlton Fisk has been caught in 2,226 games during his career, more than any other player in Major League history in that position. With 72 home runs in his forties, he also leads this category. He also led the catchers with his 376 career home runs, but was then surpassed by Mike Piazza . He took part in the all-star game a total of eleven times.
Fisk is one of the few baseball players adored by two-team supporters. In the White Sox his jersey number 72 has not been awarded since September 14, 1997, the Red Sox has not given his number 27 to any other player since September 4, 2000. In 2000, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame . On August 7, 2005, the Chicago White Sox unveiled a statue in Carlton Fisk's US Cellular Field .
