Although Bay missed the start of the 2004 season due to an injury, he was able to record the best offensive performance of all rookies in the National League at the end of the season . Thanks to 26 home runs, 82 RBI and a slugging percentage of .550, he received the National League's MLB Rookie of the Year Award .

In 2005, Bay was first selected for the All-Star Game . However, he was only a substitute and at the end of the match the only player on both teams who was not given any playing time. After the season ended, Bay extended his Pittsburgh contract for another four years. The contract earned him $ 18.25 million in earnings.

In the 2006 season, Bay set a new club record. He scored twelve homers in May, more than any Pirates player had ever made in a month. In addition, this time he was selected as a starter in the All-Star Team.

After a rather average season in 2007 due to injuries, Bay increased again in 2008 and showed consistently good performances until the All-Star Break, after which he left Pittsburgh for Boston.
