Peter Szaif

Peter Szaif [ saɪ̯f ] (born August 9, 1923 in Timișoara , Kingdom of Romania , † August 29, 1970 in Wolfsburg ) was a German sculptor . In Lower Saxony he created numerous objects in public space , especially fountains .

Life

Szaif grew up in Timișoara, Romania. From 1938 to around 1942 he studied sculpture at the Timișoara Art Academy under Professor Romulus Ladea. In 1939 he received a scholarship to study art in Vienna , which he was unable to attend because of the outbreak of World War II.

From 1947, Szaif lived for a short time in France and moved to Bad Pyrmont the following year . Szaif met the Estonian painter Olga Pawlowa, whom he married. In 1952 he was one of the co-founders of the arche artist group in the Hameln / Bad Pyrmont area. In 1958 Szaif moved to Wolfsburg with his wife Olga Szaif-Pawlowa. There they were co-founders of the artist group Schloßstraße 8 - the address refers to the Wolfsburg Castle and the studios there. From 1959 to 1961 Szaif attended the sculpture class of Professor Alexander Gonda at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin . Szaif created numerous fountains and sculptures that are still formative artistic elements of urban design today. His work includes the design of the outer wall of the auditorium of the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium in Wolfsburg, which is a listed building.

Olga Szaif-Pawlowa died in Bonn in 2001 . Their son Jan Szaif has been Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Davis in the USA since 2006 .
