The Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium (short THG ) is one of seven high schools in Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony .

history

In the 1950s, the inner-city high school reached the limits of its capacity. The city announced a competition for a second grammar school, in which 25 architects took part and which was won by Titus Taeschner . The THG was built in 1958/60 according to his designs on the slope of the Klieversberg west of the city center in the Hohenstein district . On April 9, 1959, the first lessons began in the not yet fully built school on Klieversbergstrasse (today Martin-Luther-Strasse). Since April 1, 1960, it has been an independent school, which was initially called "G2" or "Neues Gymnasium Wolfsburg" and was named in 1962 after the first German Federal President Theodor Heuss (1884–1963). The outer wall of the auditorium was designed by Peter Szaif in 1966 . It consists of concrete elements and is a listed building . In the 1980s, the THG was a pilot school for the New Technologies project .

In 2001, the THG became an environmental school in Europe for the first time , and most recently it received the title in 2016. The Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium took part in the INIS project of the Bertelsmann Foundation in the early 2000s . "INIS" stands for International Network of Innovative Schools and School Systems . Furthermore, the THG was a pilot school in the transformation of Lower Saxony schools into independent schools and is a member of the Wolfsburg support association for special talents.

On February 27, 2007, Principal Studies Director Klaus Bieler took over the management of the school . In 2008, the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium was among the best 50 of over 200 participating schools when applying for the German School Prize .

As part of a public-private partnership , the school was the first school in the region to be sold by the city of Wolfsburg to Wolfsburg Schulmodernisierungsgesellschaft mbH, a subsidiary of Wolfsburg Stadtwerke , in 2008 . Necessary structural extensions were financed through the sale. The construction work required for this began in July 2008 and was completed about a year later.

From 2008 to 2010 the school took part in the Comenius program . The basis was a student exchange program with a school in Lendava , Slovenia . During the festival week for the 50th anniversary of the THG, the school was awarded the title " School without Racism - School with Courage " on April 20, 2010 . The school has been an open all-day school since the 2010/2011 school year .

Klaus Bieler retired at the end of August 2013 and was temporarily replaced by Matthias Schröder. Katrin Gaus has been heading the grammar school since February 2014. On April 14, 2015 - after four years of planning and construction - the new cafeteria "Elly" (named after Elly Heuss-Knapp ) opened.

present

In the 2017/2018 school year, around 870 pupils attended the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium, who were taught in seven wings, three sports halls and a work room. There is also a wing with a student library, “self-study center” and all-day area, as well as the cafeteria. The auditorium, which can accommodate around 700 visitors, is occasionally also used for extracurricular events.

In the lower secondary level there is usually a bilingual class with English-language lessons in selected subjects (up to the 10th year) and a wind class (up to the 6th year). Students in the 8th to 10th grade, optionally also in the 11th grade, take elective courses . Project weeks , method training and computer training are held regularly . Talented pupils in lower secondary education can take part in “ pull-out courses ”, in which they leave the scheduled lessons on an hourly basis and deal with specific topics. Several groups of schoolchildren regularly take part in projects for the Jugend forscht competition. A working group looks after the school garden with its orchard .
