Independent school

Independent school , also self-responsible school or self-reliant school , is the name of several model experiments and educational reforms in German federal states.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

In the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , the prerequisites for the introduction of the independent school in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were created after a model test with 20 schools in the area of responsibility of the former state education minister Henry Tesch ( CDU ). Four priorities were set for school development: classroom organization and design, design of in-school and out-of-school partnerships, resource management and personnel management.

With the amendment of the state school law of February 13, 2009, the results were made mandatory for all schools in the state. The independent decision on site at the school is thus rated higher in certain areas of school life and school organization than the central control from the Ministry of Education in Schwerin . This should lead to more performance and more efficiency.

North Rhine-Westphalia

In the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , the Independent School project took place from August 1, 2002 to August 31, 2008 at selected schools . In this joint project by the Ministry for Schools, Youth and Children of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Bertelsmann Foundation , a redesign of the school organization with more “personal responsibility” for the schools was to be tested.

Lower Saxony

In Lower Saxony, around 2004, a pilot project entitled “Independent Schools” took place. Since then, all schools have been run as independent schools.

Baden-Württemberg

In Baden-Württemberg , a nationwide system - consisting of guidelines and qualification modules - was developed as part of the three-year “Independent School” project by the beginning of 2014, with the support of 29 schools of all school types, which is intended to support schools on their way to more independence . This involves both the management of the school by the school management and further development from within, in which all those involved are involved. The schools each take part in three qualifications, within which practical recommendations for action and working materials were developed and tested in the schools in the course of the project. The "Independent School" guideline developed and tested in the project includes topics such as strategy and personnel development, management methods, public relations, financial management, individual support, professional orientation, quality management and cooperation with in-school and out-of-school partners. "Independent School" is a jointly initiated project by SCHULEWIRTSCHAFT Baden-Württemberg and MTO Psychological Research and Consulting GmbH.

Hesse

In February 2012, the state of Hesse raised 24 general education schools to the status of "Independent School" (SES). These schools receive what is known as a "large budget" and can therefore, for example, manage their own personnel resources.
