Environmental school in Europe is a title given by the international foundation for environmental education , represented in Germany by the German Society for Environmental Education (DGU). As part of the international project Environmental School in Europe - International Agenda 21 School , schools are awarded that meet special requirements for environmental education and environmentally friendly behavior.

history

The program started in 1994. In Germany, it began with eight participating schools and developed into the largest environmental program at German schools within ten years. In the 2005/2006 school year, 350 schools from twelve federal states took part. Worldwide more than 14,000 schools in more than 38 countries participate.

As of the 2005/2006 school year, the DGU expanded the project to include the title International Agenda 21 School for special achievements by schools in the development of sustainability processes inside and outside the school premises.

criteria

An “environmental school” can be described as a school that conveys environmental awareness to its students and takes special care to protect the environment . This can be done by saving energy , for example by saving heating energy with solar collectors or by generating electricity from solar energy with the help of solar cells . Some schools also have biotopes and their own small gardens.

Procedure

The schools apply with a concept they have developed themselves, a jury decides on the award of the awards after examining the documentation. The award is given for one year and schools can take part in the project several times.
