Edward Berger (* 1970 in Wolfsburg ) is a German film director and screenwriter .

Live and act

Edward Berger graduated from the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium in Wolfsburg. From 1990 to 1991 he attended the Braunschweig University of Art as a guest auditor and then moved to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University , where he completed his directing studies in 1994. There he made several short films that were shown at numerous international festivals. He then gained his first professional experience at the American independent producer Good Machine. a. in films by Ang Lee and Todd Haynes . Edward Berger was also a visiting professor. He held lectures and workshops at Columbia University in New York , Berlin University of the Arts and HFF Potsdam .

He directed Berger's first feature film based on his own book for Gomez . He was also active as a writer and director on several episodes of the television series KDD - Criminal Police Service. In addition to other television productions, for which Edward Berger mostly wrote the scripts, he has also directed commercials . In 2012 his film A Good Summer was awarded the Grimme Prize. His feature film Jack was invited to the competition at the Berlinale 2014 and was awarded the German Film Prize in silver for the best feature film in 2015. From August 2014 he shot the first five episodes of the eight-part television series Deutschland 83 for UFA Fiction , which premiered in 2015 at the Berlin International Film Festival in the Berlinale Special.

In 2018 he created three episodes in the series The Terror and the five-part English-language miniseries Patrick Melrose . For his production with Patrick Melrose, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy in the category Best Director for a miniseries, a television film or a special . He also won a BAFTA for Best Limited Series .

His film All My Loving premiered on February 9, 2019 in the Panorama section of the Berlinale . The film was nominated in several categories in the shortlist for the German Film Award 2019 .

Berger is married to the actress Nele Mueller-Stöfen and lives with their two children in Berlin.
