The Ratsgymnasium (internal RGW for Ratsgymnasium Wolfsburg) is a grammar school in the center of Wolfsburg . It is the first grammar school founded in Wolfsburg.
history
In 1942, four years after the city of the KdF-Wagons was founded (renamed Wolfsburg in 1945), the city's first secondary school (renamed Ratsgymnasium in 1958) was founded. It is thus the oldest grammar school in Wolfsburg and later formed the starting point for other schools to be founded. Initially housed in barracks south of Ludendorffstrasse (today Heinrich-Heine-Strasse), the school later moved to elementary school barracks southeast of Heßlingen . After school lessons were stopped due to the war, lessons were resumed on October 1, 1945, this was announced in the city by loudspeaker announcements.
For the construction of a new secondary school, Professor Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer from Braunschweig received first prize on July 21, 1950 as part of a first architectural competition in Wolfsburg. The new school was built on the site of the barrack church, consecrated in 1947, which was torn down again in 1951 and rebuilt nearby as the Christ Church . On May 28, 1951, classes began for some classes in the first wing of the newly built school building south of today's Pestalozziallee; most classes initially stayed in the school barracks. On December 9, 1955, the school was inaugurated after the final construction phase , which included the auditorium and gymnasium. In 2011, the fundamental modernization of the school building began and on September 3, 2012 the first extension for the 5th and 6th grades was officially opened. A total of eight new or modernized classrooms, a redesigned outdoor area and an open zone with break and group areas were created in this innovative building. On May 18, 2015, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for a new science wing and two gyms. This wing S for STEM and sport was put into operation for schools on October 16, 2017. In the next step, the main building on Pestalozziallee will be replaced by a new building. On May 4, 2017, the winning design of the architecture competition for the new construction of the main building was presented at a public award ceremony in the town hall's community hall. The upper level classes will take place during the new building in the nearby former Porsche Realschule - now Ratsgymnasium Trakt K.
As part of a model test, the Ratsgymnasium became the central location of a Dietz Computer Systems computer system as early as 1978 , which was used by all Wolfsburg high schools, vocational schools and the adult education center for computer science lessons until 1980. In addition to the Ratsgymnasium, there are now four other state high schools in Wolfsburg, including the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium , with which the Ratsgymnasium cooperates in the upper level. The cooperation results in an individual focus for the student body, which means a high degree of choice of subject combinations within the framework of the upper level profile.
The school has three profiles: a musical and cultural profile with the subject performing games in the upper level and theater groups in every year, wind classes with the Brazz project, a European profile with the offer of four foreign languages, European events, European School partnerships, the Comenius project and English as the working language in secondary school and a MINT profile (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology) as a multi-certified MINT-EC school. Since April 15, 2011, the Ratsgymnasium has had the title " School without Racism - School with Courage ".

Commitment to environmental protection
The Ratsgymnasium promotes an increased awareness of the school community for the environment and climate. Projects with this objective were, in addition to the Globe AG, for example the appointment of "energy managers" in the individual classes. Today, participation in various competitions on the subject of environmental protection and climate change, such as participation in the VCD FahrRad campaign , the fll competition Climate Connections and the PowerPakt energy saving campaign sponsored by dena are part of school life. In class, this interest is reflected in the establishment of seminar courses on the social and scientific problems of climate change.
Another environmentally friendly initiative was the school's own photovoltaic system, which was installed in 1998 and produced a yield of over 9240 kWh. The proportion of energy it provided for the school's total electricity consumption was, however, relatively small due to its small dimensions.
