The Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) is a legal association based in Berlin and the common interest group of German automobile manufacturers and suppliers. In 1901 the Association of German Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (VDMI) was founded, renamed the Reichsverband der Automobilindustrie (RDA) in 1923 and renamed to today's name in 1946.

history

Former headquarters of the VDA in Frankfurt / M.

The VDMI (Association of German Motor Vehicle Manufacturers ) was founded on January 19, 1901 in the Hotel Kaiserhof in Eisenach . Founding members were:

Gustav Vischer was the first chairman and Eugène de Dietrich was his deputy.

The VDMI campaigned for the promotion of road traffic, opposed burdensome official measures and for customs protection and control of motor shows. An agreement of the VDMI was z. For example, the luxury tax for automobiles introduced in 1906, which resulted in the capacity-dependent tax classes, should be included in the type designation. A Mercedes 45 PS became the Mercedes 26/45 PS . This tax horsepower was typical for the type designations until the end of the 1920s.

After the name was changed in 1923 to Reichsverband der Automobilindustrie (RDA), the association has been called the Association of the Automobile Industry (VDA) since May 2, 1946 .

The first woman in the presidency from 1989 to 1996 was Erika Emmerich . Her successor was Bernd Gottschalk . After Gottschalk resigned in March 2007, Matthias Wissmann followed him .

The VDA today

The VDA is known to the public as the organizer of the annual international automobile exhibition . It takes place alternately in Frankfurt (cars) and in Hanover (commercial vehicles). The actual tasks of the VDA are the representation of interests, the exchange of views between the members and the development of standards such as recommendations for logistical procedures of industrial companies or the de facto standard for EDI in the German automotive industry.

The VDA is an associated member of the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers ACEA and a member of the Association of the European Automotive Supplier Industry CLEPA .

In addition, the VDA is a founding member of the ENX and Odette organizations, which perform standardization tasks in the area of cross-company cooperation in the automotive industry.

VDA recommendations for EDI, transport labels and documents accompanying the shipment

Today practically every German automobile manufacturer and thus also all medium-sized and large suppliers use EDI , whereby the requirements of almost all automobile manufacturers break the original basic standards of the VDA. In the course of globalization , German companies are also increasingly switching to EDIFACT . However, the VDA is also trying to standardize here, according to which only certain EDIFACT message types should be used. Utilizing all of EDIFACT's messaging options would lead to a drifting apart again and counteract the standardization of data exchange. Since 2011 there have been activities to develop a number of new VDA subsets based on global EDIFACT message formats for the logistics sector. The aim is to achieve a high level of standardization for EDIFACT formats as well.
